WordPress or Custom Development: Which Does Your Business Need?

A practical way to decide between a WordPress build and a custom application, without the sales pitch from either side.

Agencies that only build WordPress will tell you WordPress does everything. Agencies that only write custom code will tell you WordPress is a toy. Both are selling. The decision is actually straightforward.

WordPress is right when

Content is the product – pages, articles, services, portfolio. Your team needs to publish without a developer. You want a standard e-commerce catalogue. You need it live in weeks, not months. Roughly eight out of ten business websites fall here, and choosing custom code for them wastes money.

Custom development is right when

The core of the system is a workflow, not a page: billing, inventory, scheduling, dispatch, admissions. Multiple user roles with different permissions. Heavy data entry or reporting. Integration with machines, devices or internal systems. Anything where the business rules are yours alone and no plugin will ever match them.

The hybrid most businesses end up with

A WordPress site for the public face, and a separate custom application for the operations, connected by an API. The marketing team edits the website freely, and the software nobody outside the company sees is built exactly to the process.

The question to ask yourself

If you can describe what you need as “pages that we update”, it is WordPress. If you describe it as “when this happens, then that should happen, unless…”, it is custom software.
